Assemblage Art & Altered Dolls

Doll heads and parts attract me because of the essence I sense within them of ‘expectations not yet formed’.
I also find baby doll faces hold a wisdom and knowingness that is deep and expansive, not yet bound or restricted by linear learning, expected behavior or learned conditioning.
I usually deconstructed dolls, but occasionally found interesting dolls that hold the same not- to-be-expected energy in and of themselves and use them as individual elements in a piece.
Eventually I was drawn to alter complete dolls. Replacing the doll head with another object seems to take the piece away from doll energy into a more surreal place.
Yet, some dolls held their own character so strongly that I was moved to alter them without deconstruction.
Each piece is altered from a found doll with fabric body and bisque arms and legs. The unique heads are other found objects, oversize flowers and whatever else moves me.
The clothing is typically altered doll clothes, with each piece uniquely embellished with beads, glitter, jewels and so on.
The altered dolls are assemblage sculptures and all details are permanently attached and cannot be removed.
Each doll is permanently mounted upon an embellished artist-fashioned painted wooden base. Sizes range from 10” to 18” tall.
